The Story of Ruth

- Ruth, a Moabitess, accepts the one God and joins her mother-in-law, Naomi, when she returns to Judah. Both women are widows with no visible means of support, but through trusting God, Ruth finds food for them in the fields of Boaz, a relative of Naomi's husband. Boaz praises Ruth for her rare devotion to her mother-in-law and to God, which was known among the people of Bethlehem. He later marries Ruth and provides a home for her and Naomi. His words to Ruth are true for everyone who loves God, "The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust." (Ruth 2:12). The account shows God's direction and protection, as well as Ruth's, Naomi's, and Boaz's, genuine care for one another's welfare. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes: "Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore, it cannot exist alone but requires all mankind to share it." (Science and health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 57.)
